Summer is here! Of course we want to rush out into the warm weather, but there are a few things to consider before letting your child out into the wild. Many summer activities can be fun, but they can also be dangerous without the proper planning. Here are 3 things to look out for when planning summer fun with your kids.
The Sun
The sun is a beautiful thing. It creates heat and light for those pretty summer days, but it can also be harmful. Before you and your family go out into the sun, consider a few things. Check the temperature first. It may be summer, but a 70-degree day is a lot different than a 90-degree day.
Another thing to do before you leave the house is to pack a bag full of hats, sunscreen, and lots of water. Once you get to your destination, be sure to check for shady areas and take cool-off breaks.
The Water
If your summer activities involve water, be aware of the risks. First, know you and your child’s swimming abilities. If you can’t swim too well, it may be good to keep your child in the area of the pool that you feel most comfortable in. No matter what your swimming ability is, you should participate in water activities when a guard is around. You can’t be in every place at once. It’s the lifeguard’s job to watch out for everyone, especially if you’re with a large group of children.
The Bugs
Kids come out in the summer to play, but so do the bugs. One of the biggest threats to a fun summer day is a bug bite. Before going out, make sure you’re aware of any bug allergies your children or their friends may have. Even if there are no allergies, bug bites are still a pain. Be sure to spray your children with bug repellant spray.
Buy a bug spray that’s also water resistant. Water washes off most sprays, and bugs hang out near the water, where your child is the most vulnerable. Another thing to check for before going out is any bug-borne illnesses. Mosquitos usually carry these diseases, so check your news stations for any alerts. Finally, once you’ve gone out and had some fun, check for ticks when you get back home.
