For most adults, playing outside not only set the stage for the best memories of their childhood — it was the only option! Before the days of endless game systems and television shows, the leading source of entertainment was playing outside with friends. While these new forms of entertainment aren’t bad, they lack certain benefits that come with being outdoors. Finding a balance with emphasis on spending time outside is an easy way to provide our kids certain physical and mental strengths.
Health
Besides the obvious effects of being active, like weight loss and improved physical health, playing outside provides a multitude of various benefits. One direct positive is an increase in the amount of Vitamin D our bodies receive. Of course, too much sun can be harmful for our skin, so apply sunscreen as needed to prevent sunburn.
The great outdoors also provides a wonderful outlet for releasing stress. Taking a break from the normal stresses of life is important for everyone, and this includes kids! Another great benefit is an increase in attention span. Not only have outdoor activities been shown to increase kids’ attention spans, but certain indoor activities have been shown to make them worse.
Social
Playing outside with others is also a great way to improve our child’s social interactions. While all forms of outside play help with this, unstructured settings allow kids to interact with each other on their own, providing new situations and personalities for them to discover. Offering an easy way to make new friends and learn new games will always be a good decision, and your kid will enjoy these new experiences!
Alabama Free Will Baptist Children’s Home
The Free Will Baptist Children’s Home has taken in children in the state of Alabama since our founding in 1947. We believe that nature provides many benefits for children in crisis, and we are thankful for the ability to provide easy access to the outdoors for children in our care. We are fortunate enough to have a small pasture (complete with cows) and 260 acres of land that are used for various outdoor activities. This includes hiking, hunting, fishing, swimming, frisbee golf, planting trees, and simply enjoying and playing in the outdoors! Contact us today for more information about our home, our mission, and how to donate.
