Burning Man Bikes Become Hurricane Relief
Burning Man is a festival in Nevada that is unlike anything else in the nation. For a short period of time, around 70,000 people gather in the desert for an experience that can hardly be described. Music is playing, costumes are worn, and giant wooden statues are lit on fire in moments of celebration.
This year, the festival continued to supply positivity even after the last patron had gone home. Even though the people had left, the bikes they brought to the festival remained. Over 5,000 bikes were left, but fear not – they quickly found a new home! A couple of inspired individuals saw pictures of the abandoned bikes, and they have begun cleaning them and sending them to hurricane victims to help with their transportation needs.
San Diego Taking Care of Its Homeless Veterans
Homelessness is an uncomfortably common problem in our society, but cities are coming up with new methods of helping those who’ve fallen into the cycle. San Diego, led by the San Diego Housing Commission, has recently found great success in housing their city’s homeless veterans! They were able to meet their goal of 1,000 residents receiving permanent shelter in a little over a year, thanks to monetary incentives for landlords and the good people of San Diego rallying around the mission. The city is far from done, though, and they plan to use this forward momentum to continue providing housing to veterans and other homeless residents who could use support to get their feet back on the ground.
